Sri Lanka Dhamma Vihara library was established in Canberra in year 2010 by Sri Lanka Dhamma Vihara Association of Canberra Inc (SLDVAC) as a resource centre for those who are interested in learning Buddhism.  Buddhism was founded in northeastern India by Prince Siddhartha in the sixth century B.C.  Having achieved enlightenment, he became known as Shakyamuni and Lord Buddha and preached a path of salvation to his followers.  His teachings that are collectively known as Buddhism is currently practiced as a religion and a philosophy by more than 300 million people in all over the world. Sri Lanka is a country in Asia where the majority of the population practices Buddhism as their religion, philosophy and way of life. Buddhism which was originated in India, later spread to different countries in the world. Over the time, Buddhism has been subjected to changes; as a result, different countries now have different sectors of Buddhism. Countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand and Mianmar, which are neighboring countries of India, are believed to have preserved Buddhism in its original form which is known as Theravada Buddhism.

Sri Lanka Dhamma Vihara Association of Canberra Inc, which is a registered Buddhist Association in Canberra, initiated this library with the intention of facilitating the various communities in Canberra in learning Buddhism in its pure form. The library contains adequate resources for beginners as well as advanced learners to learn Buddhism. It contains a wide range of books that could provide the reader a basic knowledge on Buddhism and also the books that discuss the Buddhist philosophy in depth. The library also contains books that help learning a number of Asian languages including Pali, Sanskrit and Sinhalese which serve as media for learning Buddhism. The Buddhism has been written and preserved for the last few centuries mostly in these ancient languages. In addition to the above, the library also contains periodicals and newspapers related to Buddhism.

The library is temporarily located at the address shown in this website. It will be permanently located in the premises of the proposed Buddhist Monastery in north Canberra which is in the process of development at the moment. It is the intention of the management and the well wishers of the library to develop the library into a major knowledge base and information centre of Buddhism in Australia in the forthcoming years.
